Our History

From 1909 to Today: A Century of Sailing in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida, has long been a haven for sailors, with its protected waters, consistent breezes, and a community deeply rooted in maritime tradition. The city’s sailing legacy began in 1909 with the founding of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) by a group of passionate boaters. Initially without a clubhouse or dock, these early enthusiasts laid the foundation for what would become one of the nation’s most esteemed sailing institutions.

In 1917, SPYC inaugurated its clubhouse on the downtown waterfront, solidifying its presence in the heart of the city. By 1919, the club had initiated its Junior Sailing program, fostering young talent and instilling a love for the sport in generations to come . The club’s commitment to excellence was evident as it began hosting significant regattas, including the St. Petersburg to Havana Race in 1930, a precursor to the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC).

Our adaptive boats and accessible docks make sailing possible for everyone, including individuals with disabilities.

We are a proud supporter of the Warrior Sailing Program, providing free facilities, equipment, and staff support for veterans and active service members.

From summer camps for kids as young as five to ongoing programs for adults and families, sailing is always in season at Sail St. Pete.

United by Sailing

Building a Community on the Water

The 1940s marked a pivotal expansion of sailing opportunities with the establishment of the St. Petersburg Sailing Center. Operated by SPYC, the center became a hub for both novice and experienced sailors, offering programs that emphasized education, competition, and community engagement. Over the decades, the center has hosted numerous regional and national regattas, adaptive sailing initiatives, and youth camps, reinforcing St. Petersburg’s reputation as a premier sailing destination.
